Making Soy Wax Candles

• For each votive candle you wish to make, you need to melt 2 ounces of soy wax. To prevent the wax from igniting, it is recommended that you melt the soy wax in a double boiler. Soybean wax flakes are easy to find and may be purchased at a candle supply shop near you.

• For easy monitoring of temperature, you should clip a candle thermometer to you melting pot’s side.

• Once all the wax is melted, add the dye of your choice into the melting pot. Note: before adding the dye, make certain that the temperature on the thermometer reads somewhere between 170 and 180 degrees. Also, make sure that you use appropriate wax dye and not water based dyes or food coloring. Some people make the mistake of adding in crayons for color. You should be aware that this won’t work as they will clog the wick, making it impossible for the candle to flame.

• Before pouring in the dye, give it a good shake and add the desired amounts. This is usually a couple of drops. To disperse the dye thoroughly in the soybean wax, use a wooden spoon to stir. If you think that your candle needs more color, then you may add more of the dye.

• Decrease the temperature to between 150 and 155 degrees and warm the mold by using an oven set to the lowest setting.

• Once this is done, pour it into the molds, filling it to the top. Allow for the soybean wax to cool and form a soft film at the top.

• Gently push a wick through the film and make sure that it is centered, and then give the wax about 4 hours to cool and solidify. Later you may take it out of the molds.
